Measure Helps Homeless Children, Families

Kudos to Sen. Edward M. Augustus Jr., the leadership and members of the Massachusetts Legislature for taking a major step to help homeless children and their families.

Here in Massachusetts, on any given day, there are 3,000 homeless children living in 170 family and domestic violence shelters, including 15 shelters in Worcester, and many thousands more living in cars, campgrounds and sofas in the homes of friends and family.

Gov. Mitt Romney recently signed legislation that includes $500,000 for Horizons for Homeless Children’s play-space programs, which provide homeless children living in shelters with the opportunity to engage with trained HHC volunteers in educational play.

This unique initiative gives homeless children the opportunity to play, learn and develop that all children deserve.

We commend Mr. Augustus for his central role in supporting this initiative.
