10th ANNUAL RECOGNITION EVENT ACKNOWLEDGES THOSE WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF HOMELESS CHILDREN. THEO AND PAUL EPSTEIN KEYNOTE SPEAKERS.

Horizons for Homeless Children presents awards to volunteers, in-kind service providers, and partners.  Event a huge success.

ROXBURY, MA. – (June 2, 2006) – Horizons for Homeless Children, a Massachusetts non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless children and their families, held its 10th Annual Recognition and Awards Dinner on Wednesday, May 31st at the Cambridge Marriott Hotel.  The event acknowledged the hundreds of Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), volunteers who spend time with homeless children each week, as well as the numerous companies and partnering agencies who support Horizons for Homeless Children in our efforts to improve the quality of life for homeless children.

The event featured keynote speakers Theo and Paul Epstein, co-founders of Red Sox Foundation’s “A Foundation to be Named Later*.”   In attendance at the event were over 450 people who traveled to Boston from all over Massachusetts to celebrate the accomplishments of the organization over the last year and receive recognition for their diligence and commitment to Horizons for Homeless Children.  Long term volunteer Ron Carroll was honored as PAL of the Year, a deserving candidate who has spent the last several years volunteering through Horizons for Homeless Children, spending two hours a week with homeless children in local area shelters.

Commissioner Ann Reale of the Department of Early Education and Care accepted the Outstanding Advocate Award for her commitment to the needs of homeless children this past fall when she oversaw the services provided for the young children who were evacuated from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina to Camp Edwards on Cape Cod.  Arnold Worldwide were presented with the Awareness Building Award for their amazing work on a new Horizons for Homeless Children Public Service Announcement.

There were three recipients of the annual Sue Heilman Award for Excellence: Lillian Calderon of St. Ambrose Family Inn, Angela Pena, an infant teacher in HHC’s Dorchester Community Children’s Center and Jackie Payne who has been one of HHC’s van drivers for more than 6 years.  All women were recognized for their outstanding commitment to homeless children, as well as the enthusiasm and energy they bring to their work.  Outgoing Horizons for Homeless Children Board Chairman Mark Edwards received the most prestigious award of the evening, the Horizons for Homeless Children Award, for his amazing dedication to the agency during the five years he has served as Board Chairman.

“It was a wonderful evening!" HHC Executive Director Sue Heilman said.  “It was our opportunity to thank all of our volunteers and collaborators whose support is critical to our success.”

*The Foundation was established to benefit Horizons for Homeless Children and seven other nonprofit organizations that support community programs focusing on at-risk, underprivileged and disadvantaged youth.
