Horizons for Homeless Children (HHC), a Massachusetts non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless children and their families, held its 15th Annual Recognition and Awards Dinner recently at The Colonnade Hotel in Boston.
The event acknowledged the hundreds of Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), volunteers who spend time with homeless children each week, as well as the numerous companies, partnering agencies and staff that support Horizons for Homeless Children in their efforts to improve the quality of life for homeless children and their families.
At the Recognition Dinner, Medford's Robert Conway was presented with the 2011 PAL of the Year Award for his incredible dedication to Horizons for Homeless Children's Playspace Programs.
Conway has been a PAL for more than five years at Just-A-Start House in Somerville, a teen parenting program that serves young mothers and their children. With his gentle manner and ability to capture the attention of even the most active toddler, he is respected by shelter staff, mothers and children.
Conway covers extra shifts when other PALs are unable to attend and has further supported the Playspace Programs by presenting at PAL trainings.
"At the Recognition and Awards Dinner each year, we take an opportunity to let our volunteers, partners and collaborators know how critical their support is to the children and families we serve," said Åsa Fanelli, President and CEO, HHC. "Robert continues to help us make a difference in the lives of homeless children and their families and because of the dedication of volunteers like him, we can work towards breaking the cycle of homelessness."
The event included an address by Marie St. Fleur, chief of advocacy and strategic investment for the city of Boston, and in attendance at the event were over 300 people who traveled to Boston from all over Massachusetts to celebrate the accomplishments of the organization over the last year and receive recognition for their diligence and commitment to Horizons for Homeless Children.
