Sudbury Native Runs Marathon for Horizons for Homeless Children

Sudbury News, April 13, 2011

SUDBURY - Months of training through one of New England's toughest winters will culminate in a just a week's time as Sudbury native Rachel King prepares to run the 115th Boston Marathon on April 18.

She's making the best of warming temperatures and longer evenings as race day approaches, but the improving weather certainly isn't the only inspiration which has Rachel steadfastly completing her rigorous training. Rachel plans to dedicate her 26-mile run to the 100,000 homeless children of Massachusetts.

Rachel is training to run the Boston Marathon for Horizons for Homeless Children (HHC), a Roxbury-based organization that offers early education and care programs to young homeless children and comprehensive support services to their families on their path to permanent housing. With over 140 Playspaces (educational and recreational spaces) in shelters across Massachusetts, as well as three Community Children's Centers in the Greater Boston area, HHC strives to break the cycle of homelessness by ensuring young children in homeless families are as "school ready" as their housed peers by the time they reach kindergarten. HHC also assists parents in setting and reaching educational and employment goals as their family advocates guide them through the daunting task of acquiring permanent housing.

Rachel, a film editor at Evolution Media, has been committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness through volunteer work at a variety of homeless youth-centered organizations and raised funds for HHC in last year's Boston Marathon, her first-ever full marathon event. She is delighted to combine her passion for helping children as well as the homeless by running and fundraising for HHC again this year.

"I've been familiar with Horizons for Homeless Children through my time volunteering at homeless shelters," Rachel said. "I think this organization is an extremely worthwhile cause. I had an amazing fund raising experience with Horizons for Homeless Children last year, and I'm excited to do it again!"
