Thanks to a Back Bay family, homeless children in Weymouth now have a place to play.
With the support of Craig Szeman, who has supported Horizons for Homeless Children for more than 15 years, the nonprofit was able to renovate a Playspace -- an area inside the shelter with books, art supplies, blocks and other equipment where childen can grow and learn in a safe and stimulating environment.
Szeman attended the March 3 ribbon cutting ceremony with his kids.
"As the father of three young children, I know the value of providing children with the space and materials to learn, play and be creative," Szeman said. "It was a great experience to be able to share this dedication with my own children."
Åsa Fanelli, President and CEO of Horizons for Homeless Children, said she was thankful for the Szeman family's dedication to the organization's mission.
"Because of the Szeman family's continued support, children at the Weymouth Playspace will continue to enjoy the benefits of an engaging, stimulating learning environment that every child needs and deserves."
The addition of this new Playspace brings the total number of homeless children served each week through Horizons for Homeless Children to more than to over 2,200. Horizons for Homeless Children serves an additional 175 homeless children each weekday through its three Community Children's Centers, Boston's only comprehensive, full-time child care centers specifically for homeless children.
