Playspace Programs Volunteer Description

TITLE:
Playspace Activity Leader (PAL)

SUPERVISOR:
Shelter Staff Liaison and Playspace Programs Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Prepare and lead age appropriate activities, games, and/or projects with children in Family Shelters, Teen Parenting Programs, and Domestic Violence Programs.
  • Promote positive interactions.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:  

  • Foster healthy development through interactions and play with children.
  • Supervise age appropriate activities for 1 to 5 children.
  • Coordinate clean up of the Playspace at the end of each shift.
  • Maintain communication with shelter staff, Playspace Programs Manager and volunteer partner(s).

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong interest in preschool and school age children, patience, dependability, sensitivity to homeless issues.
  • Preschool or elementary teaching experience is a plus.
  • Must be at least 18 years old to be in an unsupervised setting.
  • 16 & 17 year olds have limited options.

BENEFITS AND TRAINING:  

  • Initial orientation and training (6 hours).
  • Ongoing support and continuing education opportunities. 
  • Opportunities to gain experience with children and obtain greater awareness of family homelessness. 
  • Additional training on domestic violence may be required at some domestic violence programs.

HOURS:
Weekdays between the hours of 8:00am and 9:00 pm.
    
COMMITMENT:
2 hour shift, same time and day once a week, not including travel time. There is a minimum commitment of 6 months.

LOCATIONS:
To be arranged after training. Over 140 shelter locations statewide. Days and times vary by location.
