Community Service

The Community Service Program at Horizons for Homeless Children works with community groups who want to improve the lives of children and families experiencing homelessness.  Our primary focus at this time is to work with children at the fifth grade and middle school age level through their schools, faith-based or other community groups.

The program guides groups through a multi-month or year-long program that involves a combination of educational sessions and service projects.  These opportunities offer participants a greater awareness and understanding about the issues of child and family homelessness, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping community members who are in need.

Components of the Community Service Program

Program activities may include:

1. Program introduction

  • Age-appropriate discussion/presentation facilitated by Horizons for Homeless Children's Community Service Coordinator at group's site or our site.

2. Education and/or awareness projects

  • Creating a display for school or community about family homelessness issues and solutions.
  • Writing articles for community and organizational newspapers, newsletters, and bulletins.
  • Writing letters to city or state legislatures about issues of family homelessness.

3. Service projects

  • Collecting funds, toys, art supplies, books or other items for use in our Community Children's Centers and Playspaces.
  • Hands-on service day refurbishing/cleaning a Playspace in an area family shelter.
