On May 13th, 2005, Horizons for Homeless Children's Community Service Coordinator Lauren Scopaz facilitated an introductory disucssion about the issues of child and family homelessness with Cub Scout Den #197 at the Bowman Elementary School in Lexington.
The discussion helped the third grade scouts learn more about the needs of homeless children and families as well as ways in which to help them return to self-sufficiency. The scouts also collected a lot of toys for the children served at HHC's two Community Children's Centers.
Parent Karen Politis Virk has this to say about the scouts' involvement in the Community Service Program: "I thought that the presentation made a lasting impression on the boys. We all really appreciated it. I think it will also help to bring a greater awareness [of child homelessness] to more families in the Bowman school community.”
