11th Annual Recognition Event Acknowledges Those Who Make a Difference in the Lives of Homeless Children.
Horizons for Homeless Children presents awards to volunteers, in-kind service providers, and partners. Event a huge success.

Horizons for Homeless Children held its 11th Annual Recognition and Awards Dinner on Monday, June 11th at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston.  The event acknowledged the hundreds of Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), volunteers who spend time with homeless children each week, as well as the numerous companies, partnering agencies and staff who support Horizons for Homeless Children in our efforts to improve the quality of life for homeless children.

The event featured keynote speaker Representative Marie St. Fleur who spoke to the importance of supporting the mission and work of Horizons for Homeless Children. In attendance at the event were almost 400 people who traveled to Boston from all over Massachusetts to celebrate the accomplishments of the organization over the last year and receive recognition for their diligence and commitment to Horizons for Homeless Children.

Long term volunteer Kurt Mittelstaedt was honored as PAL of the Year, a deserving candidate who has spent the last several years volunteering through Horizons for Homeless Children, spending two hours a week with homeless children in local area shelters.  Senator Edward Kennedy accepted (via taped message) the Public Leadership Award, for his advocacy of Horizons for Homeless Children and his securing of federal resources to help HHC serve homeless children and families. ClearChannel Outdoor’s Drew Hoffman and Lois Catanzaro were presented with the Awareness Building Award for their amazing work on Horizons for Homeless Children’s statewide billboard campaign.

There were four recipients of the annual Sue Heilman Award for Excellence: Jessica London and Ellen Queeney of The Home for Little Wanderers, Flor Rivera, an infant/toddler teacher at HHC’s Putnam Investments Community Children’s Center and Colette O’Neill, Horizons for Homeless Children’s Communications Specialist.  All women were recognized for their outstanding commitment to homeless children, as well as the enthusiasm and energy they bring to their work.  Jacquie and Brett Browchuk received the most prestigious award of the evening, the Horizons for Homeless Children Award, for their amazing dedication to the agency over the course of the past several years.

“It was a wonderful evening!" HHC Executive Director Sue Heilman said.  “It was our opportunity to thank all of our volunteers and collaborators whose support is critical to our success.”
