Kurt Mittelstaedt PAL of the Year Award One of our longest-serving volunteers, Kurt Mittelstaedt became a Playspace Activity Leader (PAL) in September, 1998. He has volunteered at several shelters including Tri City Family Housing, Bridge House and Merrimack House Family Shelter and is currently spending two hours a week with the children at Lazarus House in Lawrence. A patient and diligent volunteer, Kurt has made a positive impact on hundreds of homeless children’s lives over the years and is well-loved by families and shelter staff alike. Not only is he a committed PAL for Horizons for Homeless Children, he is also a mentor with the Lawrence School system and volunteers for charitable events.
Senator Edward Kennedy Public Leadership Award Senator Kennedy has served in the Senate since 1963. He is Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and also serves on the Senate’s Judiciary and Armed Services Committees. Senator Kennedy has led efforts to preserve the safety net for vulnerable families and children. He has been a steadfast friend of and advocate for Horizons for Homeless Children, and has played the leading role in securing federal resources to help Horizons for Homeless Children serve homeless children and their families.

In the United States, the company operates over 167,000 advertising displays and has a presence in 49 of the top 50 Designated Market Areas. It also operates airport, rail, taxi and mall advertising businesses worldwide. Thanks to the support of ClearChannel Outdoor over the past year, Horizons for Homeless Children has had the opportunity to blanket the state with billboards in both urban and suburban areas and as a result, agency awareness efforts have been taken to new heights.
Jessica London and Ellen Queeney Sue Heilman Award for Excellence, Community Members Jessica London and Ellen Queeney are both clinicians from The Home for Little Wanderers who have been working for several years in our Community Children’s Centers with the children in our classrooms who require special services. Both of them were nominated by many teachers in our Centers for their commitment to the social and emotional needs of the homeless children we serve, and the sensitivity with which they work with our staff and the children’s parents.
Flor Rivera Sue Heilman Award for Excellence, Staff Member Flor Rivera has been a teacher in our Community Children’s Centers for more than 8 years. She was nominated by many of her co-workers for her dedication to the children, her professionalism, her positive attitude, and her leadership. She has continued her education throughout her time with HHC while working full time and raising her three children. She has represented HHC at several public events over these past 8 years, including at the Women’s Breakfast in front of approx. 1000 women a few years ago.
Colette O’Neill Sue Heilman Award for Excellence, Staff Member Colette O’Neill has been the Communications Specialist at HHC for almost four years. In that time she has developed strong positive relationships with staff in all corners of the organization, Board members, as well as some of the PAL’s and families we serve. She has helped raise awareness about the issue of child homelessness within the Greater Boston, Massachusetts and national arenas to a great extent. She has served on the HHC Diversity Council, and co-chaired it for more than a year. She always has a positive and can-do attitude, and shows her creativity in every project on which she works.
Jacquie and Brett Browchuk Horizons for Homeless Children Award Brett and Jacquie Browchuk have been ardent supporters of Horizons for Homeless Children for more than 7 years. From Brett’s involvement in Putnam Investments’ leadership support of our second Community Children’s Center to his subsequent role as Treasurer on Horizons for Homeless Children’s Board of Directors to Jacquie’s longstanding dedication as a member and former Co-Chair of our Spring Gala committee, the Browchuk’s have gone above and beyond in their support of our work with homeless children and families. They have made a significant contribution to the success of Horizons for Homeless Children and despite their upcoming relocation to Connecticut (Brett recently joined CIGNA HealthCare as Senior Vice President of Service Operations), we know that their commitment will always be a part of our history and more importantly, our continued growth.
