The state budget passed by the Massachusetts Legislature and signed into law by Governor Patrick in July of 2007 authorized the Dept. of Transitional Assistance (DTA) to provide a second year of funding to Horizons for Homeless Children’s Playspace Programs. Thanks to DTA Commissioner Julia Kehoe, DTA will maintain funding at $500,000, the amount appropriated by the Legislature last year.
This funding will be coupled with private contributions and federal funding to allow HHC to expand and maintain its network of volunteer-staffed Playspace Programs at family and domestic violence shelters across the state. When this expansion is completed, HHC and over 1,000 Playspace Activity Leader volunteers will engage more than 2,000 homeless children in educational play activities each week, providing them with the opportunity for growth and development that every child deserves.
Horizons for Homeless Children expresses its gratitude to the chief supporters of this funding in the Massachusetts Legislature, Senator Edward Augustus and Representative Stephen LeDuc. We also thank the leadership and members of the Massachusetts House and Senate and Gov. Patrick for their support of this initiative.
