AmeriCorps*VISTA/Programs Coordinator
Southeast Region / New Bedford
Position available in January 2009

Horizons for Homeless Children is an independent, non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to providing early care and education services for homeless children and support services for their families in an atmosphere of safety, nurturance, and stability. The Horizons for Homeless Children Playspace Programs provide playrooms for children living in area shelters and then recruits and trains volunteers to play with the children in those Playspaces.

Assignment Overview:
The AmeriCorps*VISTA Playspace Programs Coordinator is responsible for raising awareness about Horizons for Homeless Children’s Playspace Programs throughout Massachusetts and building the volunteer capacity building in the Southeast Region.  Additionally, they are responsible for assisting with the recruitment, training and screening of Playspace Activity Leaders (volunteers).  The Playspace Programs Coordinator assists with the development of new Playspaces; building and maintaining quality in the Playspaces and restocking of Playspaces where PALs are placed and work with the shelter liaisons to assure that the Playspaces are well stocked and maintained. This is a full-time, one year position open in January in our Southeast Region in New Bedford, MA.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Playspace Volunteer Network:

  • Recruit volunteers for the Southeast Region Playspace Programs through regular PSA’s, visibility events, community outreach, mailings, flyering  media venues, and volunteer fairs
  • Maintain database for all outreach contacts, media and volunteers
  • Respond to prospective volunteer inquiries in a timely manner
  • Help to organize and coordinate volunteer trainings
  • Assist with screening all trainees through reference calls
  • Assisting with PAL trainings, volunteer events, activities and workshops.

Playspaces Programs:

  • Help build the quality of the programs through, maintenance, cleaning and organization of the Southeast Region Playspace network
  • Assess the Playspaces’ need for new equipment, additional supplies, and safety issues
  • Assist with the installation and opening of new Playspaces
  • Oversee the sorting, selecting and management of in-kind donations to be used in the Playspaces
  • Manage the monthly attendance sheets, ensure that schedules are an accurate reflection of active PALs and capture number of children served.
  • Assist in strengthening relationships with PALs through regular communication and appreciation efforts to help foster volunteer retention
  • Assist with administrative and other tasks as necessary

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • BA degree preferred
  • Data entry experience and knowledge of Windows ’98, Microsoft Word, Access & Excel
  • Excellent communication, oral, written and organizational skills
  • Able to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Strong interest in working with volunteer programs
  • Knowledge of  child development, homelessness or “at risk” populations a plus
  • Valid drivers license and access to a car
