Horizons for Homeless Children is an independent, non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to providing early care and education services for homeless children and support services for their families in an atmosphere of safety, nurturance, and stability. The Horizons for Homeless Children Playspace Programs provide playrooms for children living in area shelters and then recruits and trains volunteers to play with the children in those Playspaces.
Assignment Overview: The Commonwealth Corps member is responsible for assisting with recruitment, training and retention of volunteers. The Corps member assists with the maintenance and restocking of Playspaces where volunteers work with the shelter liaisons to assure that the Playspaces are well stocked and maintained. These opportunities are open now in the following regions; Northeast, Southeast, Central and West. The assignment requires a commitment of 800 hours over a 10 month period, with a stipend of $5,000 plus a completion bonus.
Duties and Responsibilities Include: Outreach:
- Assist with the recruitment of volunteers for the Region's Playspace Programs through outreach activities, visibility events, community outreach, mailings and flyering, media venues, and volunteer fairs
- Respond to prospective volunteer inquiries in a timely manner
- Support maintenance of database for all outreach contacts, media and volunteers
- Assist with PAL trainings (registration, materials and training packets)
- Assist with volunteer events, activities and workshops.
Playspaces Programs:
- Assist with the installation and opening of new Playspaces and refurbishment of existing Playspaces
- Assist in the sorting, selecting and management of in-kind donations to be used in the Playspaces
- Assist in the maintenance, inventory and restocking of Playspace Programs storerooms
- Assist in strengthening relationships with PALs through regular communication and appreciation efforts to help foster volunteer retention.
- Administrative and other tasks as necessary
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Must be 18 years old
- Data entry experience and knowledge of Windows '98, Microsoft Word, Access & Excel
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Excellent telephone skills
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Able to lift 50 pds
- Strong interest in working with volunteer programs, child development, homelessness or "at risk" populations a plus
- Valid drivers license and access to a car
